Forever across a blinding elsewhere was written in 2003 for trumpeter Peter Evans, after hearing an early instance of what has become a long history of Evans’ solo improvisations. I was struck by the tricks his trumpet played on the listener, where the eye and the ear never quite seem to agree on what’s happening. What look like simple and independent patterns of the fingers and embouchre result in a super-fast stream of complicated and unpredicatble sounds. Forever across a blinding elsewhere harnesses these disparate energies — of fingers, of breath, of mechanical action, of pressure — to momentarily fix in time what Evans achieves spontaneously, like trying to catch lightning in a bottle.
