A CRANE WIFE (2005)
6 VOICES, 3 FLUTES, 3 PERCUSSION
PREMIERE: 2005-02-02 (OBERLIN, OH)
The crane wife combines contemporary vocal and instrumental technique with storytelling from Noh theater in an adaptation of traditional Japanese folk tales about domestic life in early Japan, magical realism in the natural world, and the origin of birdsong. The simple yet poignant tale of a woodcutter’s kindness towards a crane, and its subsequent efforts to repay him, are intertwined with the stories of ancient wandering bird-like souls — creating a world that is somewhere between realism and ritual, the commonplace and the bizarre, the everyday and the eternal.
